The beauty of the area it is not restricted to the lake. The mountains of the province extend themselves from the Borromean gulf to the Swiss border and offer itineraries to the hiking enthusiasts passing through wild places and stone villages where it is possible to breathe in the ancient culture of our mountains.
Up the hills, there are numerous picturesque villages overlooking the lake while exploring the inner valleys it is possible to discover mountain pastures and hikers shelters by following walking paths and mule tracks. Perhaps there are not too many mountain peaks to climb but a culture to discover step by step in an harsh and untamed nature.
To safeguard the richness and beauty of the landscape, in 1992 the area was established to be a National Park, namely Valgrande National Park, which as today is the biggest wilderness area of Italy.
